The 10th-ranked Trojans received individual first-place finishes from Derek Stone in the shot put and Jim Ashby in the discus as well as Jay Clary in the 100-meter dash, Jason McElroy in the 300-meter hurdles and Robert Pendleton in the 800-meter race. WCHS placed second behind regional rival Fort Campbell. The Falcons finished with 207 points while the Trojans captured 167 points.
“We found out how strong our region is going to be this year,” commented WCHS coach Jeff Hollamon. “When you have four teams ranked in the top 10 in the state, you’ve got a battle on your hands.”
Paducah Tilghman, which placed second overall in the Henderson County Invitational over the weekend, is ranked first in the latest Class 2A poll. Ft. Campbell is ranked fourth in the AA poll while Caldwell County is ninth and the Trojans 10th.
“Once we get all our relay teams at full strength, we will be pretty strong,” Hollamon said, noting injuries to several of his key runners. “You just can’t have quality people gone in eight events and win against strong teams.”
On the girls’ side, Webster welcomed the return of senior stars Christina Dacy and Sarah Whitledge from the injured list. Both returned with a vengance, winning two events each to boost the Lady Trojans to a second-place finish also behind Fort Campbell.
Dacy looked fully recovered from her hamstring pull in winning the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle events with personal best times. Whitledge, out several weeks with a knee injury, returned in style with victories in the 100-meter dash and long jump.
Webster also got first-place finishes from eighth grader Brandi Griffin in the high jump with a personal best leap of 5’-5” as well as Jennifer Benson in the 400-meter. Her time of 59.4 was also a personal record. Ashlee Steele won the shot put while Samantha Nance continued her domination in the discus. Meagan Crouse also topped the field in the 800-meter dash. The freshman 400-meter relay team (Ashley Westerman, Whitney Kubach, Brandi Griffin and Julie Montgomery) topped the field as did the 1600-meter relay squad (Westerman, Mandi Faulkner, Rachel Crouse and Brittany Coomes).
