'Hall of Fame' ceremony to be held Friday night

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

The third class of the Webster County Trojan Football ‘Hall of Fame’ will be inducted this Friday night during ceremonies preceding the WCHS-Reidland season-opener.

Trojan greats Kent Jackson, Todd Foster, Bob Powell and Roy Cherry will honored prior to kickoff at 7 p.m.

Jackson was the Trojan quarterback from 1984-87, amassing a total of 2,749 passing yards and 24 touchdowns. He currently holds the school record for most passing yards in a single season (1,472) along with 15 touchdowns that season, which also ties a school record.

“I’m very humbled to be recognized for the accomplishments of an individual that could not have been obtained without the backing of my teammates, trust and confidence of my coaches, and the grace of God,” Jackson stated. “It is truly an honor to be selected from so many possible candidates and placed among the third class of inductees into the Trojan Football Hall of Fame.”

Jackson resides in Sebree with his wife Tara Lynn and one son Tyler Scott Hedrick.

Bob Powell was the anchor of the defensive line for the Trojans from 1977-81. He was voted ‘MVP’ of the squad his senior season and earned a football scholarship to Georgetown College.

“It’s great to be remembered for your achievements in school, but I couldn’t have done it without the other players, coaches and teachers that taught me not to quit,” Powell stated. “Webster County will always be in my heart, I hope I’m in theirs.”

Powell currently lives in Illinois.

Todd Foster earned the reputation as a hard-nosed linebacker and a bruising fullback for the Trojans from 1988-91.

He and his wife Pam, along with one-year-old daughter Ramzee live in Dixon.

Long-time WCHS teacher and coach Roy ‘Cherry Bomb’ Cherry will also join the 2008 class. He spent numerous years as head coach and assistant coach for the Trojan football program.

Previous members inducted into the Trojan Hall of Fame include Steve Cobb, Dirk Knight, Mike Hughes, Ryan Hill, Kalen Gibson, Pete Walters, Steve Catlett, Brent Brasher and coach Walter Hawkins.

The selections were nominated and voted upon by the Hall of Fame Committee which consists of Brent Green, Keith Farrell, Jason Daugherty, Marty Edwards, Regina Catlett, Jody Rich and Charlie Hust.

The committee plans to nominate and select three new members to the Hall of Fame each year with announcement and presentations being made at the first home game of the season.

Webster County football fans will get a chance at each home game to make nominations for the 2009 Class. The Quarterback Club will make available a ‘nomination box’ located at the concession stand so the public can have input on next year’s class. Nominations may also be given to any Hall of Fame Committee member.
