The Webster County Middle School boys’ basketball teams continued their seasons this past week, traveling to Eddyville to face Lyon County.
Friday the 13th was a horror show for coach Kenneth Hayes’ seventh grade squad with a season-high 25 turnovers and the first loss of the season (35-39). The young Trojans’ loss takes their season to 2-1, while their ‘big brothers’ on the eighth grade team take one on the chin as well, falling to 1-2 on the season.
A new day, a different opponent and a completely different team showed for the McLean County tourney, as the seventh graders claimed the weekend title.
The first game was against Daviess County and the young Trojans played from behind, from the opening tip. A 15-8 hole in the first quarter was stretched to 23-15 at halftime.
The Trojans narrowed the deficit to just one after a 14-9 run in the third and continued on that pace with a 15-8 fourth quarter, in a 44-38 come-back win.
Webster had just nine turnovers on the game, significantly helping themselves from their previous butter-finger problems.
Nine Trojans got into the scoring column with point guard Mason Roland leading the way with 10. Max McMain had nine, Zac Shoulders and Cole Hazelwood both scored six, Jacob Fritz had four points, Zack Pugh dropped in three and two points each from Jon Stubblefield, Colten Edwards and Colten Durrance.
The Championship game was against the home team Cougars and Webster was back in the groove, jumping on McLean 28-13 in the first half and winning 48-34 to claim the championship trophy.
Jacob Fritz unloaded on the Cougars, scoring all of his game-high 15 points in the first half. He also added four steals.
Max McMain finished in double digits with 10 points while Cole Hazelwood had seven points and four rebounds. Guard combo Roland and Shoulders had four points and three steals apiece. Pugh finished with six points, while Edwards and Mickey Morse scored two points each.
The Eighth grade team suffered two losses in the McLean turney, falling to Daviess and McLean counties.
Madison Melton had 12 points to lead the Trojans in the 31-38 loss to Daviess County. Ben Brumfiel scored 10 points to lead the Trojans in their 44-21 loss to Mclean County.
Both squads were back in action in Sebree on Tuesday night hosting Caldwell County.
The seventh grade Trojans continued their winning ways with an easy 48-17 taming of the Tigers.
Max McMain lead the charge with 11 points and Zac Shoulders contributed with 10. Roland, Pugh, and Fritz each had six points. Jon
Stubblefield scored three points while Hazelwood, Morse, and Colten Durrance added 2 points each. Webster also recorded a season-high 14 assists with Roland and Shoulders dishing out four each.
The Eighth grade Trojans received 15 points from Madison Melton but that wasn’t enough as they fell behind 11-9 at intermission and just couldn’t reel-in the victory dropping a hard-fought 31-29 battle to the visiting Tigers.
On Friday night the Trojans traveled across the Ohio to Washington Middle School on the south side of Evansville to play in the Continental Classic.
Both teams faced the home team Washington Continentals on Friday and were treated to healthy dose of humble pie, losing big.
Saturday morning the Seventh graders returned to Evansville for two more games.
WC fans that made the trip were treated to a pair of great contests, the first of which was against Helfrich Park.
Zac Shoulders had a season and game high 16 points leading the Trojans to a 52-43 win.
With his performance, all five Trojans starters have lead in scoring at different times this season, proving the unselfish and well-balanced attack the Trojans bring.
Mason Roland had a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 steals. Colten Edwards came off the bench and had a great game with six points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Max McMain knocked out seven points, Hazelwood added four, Fritz and Stubblefield had two points each, and Pugh rounded out the scoring with a free-throw.
With a short, one-game break, the Trojans were at it again against Ft Branch, but had a difficult time against the well-coached squad from the north. The Trojans carried a two-point advantage from the first quarter and into half-time 20-18.
A five-point third quarter advantage (14-9) pushed the Trojans lead to seven and that proved to be the difference as they Trojans improved to 7-2 on the season.
McMain lead the Trojans with 13 points, shooting 50% from the floor. Roland and Shoulders added eight points each, with Pugh, Fritz, Edwards, and Stubblefield scoring four apiece. Morse went 3-for-4 at the free-throw stripe and Hazelwood rounded out the scoring with one basket.
After a holiday break, the Trojans will travel to Madisonville’s James Madison Middle School on Nov. 30 to open conference play, and then will return home to face McLean on Dec. 1.
