WCHS girls thump 3rd Region squads

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Two more victories and a strong 18-5 record have the 12th-ranked WCHS Lady Trojans looking for a hopeful long run in post-season tournament beginning Feb. 22.

Webster drilled Apollo last Friday and then handed Grayson County, one of the Third Region’s top teams a 22-point defeat.

The WC girls complete regular season play this week, traveling to Caldwell County on Monday and then hosting Owensboro Catholic on Friday.

WC’s inside powerhouse tandem of Lynette Harris and Stephanie Householder was simply too much for the E-Gals to handle last Friday night in Owensboro.

Both finished with a double-double as Harris scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Householder added 14 points and 10 boards.

Webster’s defense ripped Apollo in the first quarter, holding the E-Gals to just three field goals en route to a 22-9 lead. The margin grew to 40-21 at halftime.

The Lady Trojans controlled the second half as well, outscoring the homestanding Apollo girls 26-12.

Ellie Steiner was also in double figures for Webster with 12 points while Natalie Green added nine. Kerstin Hayes and Brooke Ross finished with five points apiece while Morgan Major, Caylee Duncan and Mariah Herrera added two points each to completed the attack.

The Western Kentucky Shootout, hosted by Hopkins County Central, was designed to highlight top teams in the area.

After Saturday’s opener, it was obvious the Lady Trojans were one of the best teams in the state.

Using a very balanced scoring attack, the WC girls completely dominated Grayson (17-7).

All five Lady Trojans hit double figures with Lynette Harris’ 19 leading the way. Kerstin Hayes turned in another strong performance with 16 points while Ellie Steiner finished with 12. Stephanie Householder posted 11 points, all in the first quarter, and sat most of the game in foul trouble. Caylee Duncan added 10 points.

Webster raced out to a 26-19 lead in the fast-paced contest and held a 45-36 advantage at intermission.

Webster then delivered the knock-out punch in the third quarter, much to the delight of head coach Christina Whitsell.

“We talked about it halftime trying to put teams away, not trading baskets,” Whitsell said. “The third quarter, I felt like we did a good job coming out getting stops, pushing back in transition and getting good looks at the basket.”

Webster held a 23-point lead after three quarters of play and never looked back.

“We have a balanced scoring attack whether it’s Stephanie, Ellie, Lynette” Whitsell continued. “Any given night any of them can step up and score double figures. I felt like Brooke Ross came in and a good job, gave us a little step and little bit of energy and some of the other girls stepped up on the scoring end.”

Natalie Green added seven points in the blowout while Ross finished with four points, with Ellie Green and Morgan Major adding two points each.
