Webster track teams run strong in opener

Webster County boys dominated the track during a season-opening meet last week at the Badgett Complex on the campus of Madisonville-North High School.

Behind a pair of first-place finishes each from Shammah Baker and Jon Ashby, the Trojans ended the day with 106, topping the total of second place Madisonville (86), Hopkins County Central (38) and Dawson Springs (16).

Baker zipped past the field in the 100 meter dash with a 11.58 clocking and finished second in the 200 meter. He also won the long jump with a leap of 17-11. Teammate Zach Martin was second at 17-3 while Coleman Barnhill was sixth (14-10).

Ashby, just a freshman, dominated the distance races with an easy win in the 1600 meter and a 4:42 clocking. WC’s Miquel Velazquez was fourth in the race (5:17) while Cody Robinson was seventh (5:37), Trey Drury eighth (5:41) and Robert Daugherty 11th (6:07).

Ashby also captured the 3200 meter title in 10:23. Pryor was third (12:05), Drury fourth (12:27) and Robert Daugherty eighth (12:28).

Chase Berry won the discus with a toss of 115’-3” followed by Ethan Alvey (88’), Jordan Ashby (75’-11”) and Jerad Hobgood (64’-6”). Alvey came back to top the field in the discus with a heave of 37’-05”. Berry was second (33’-3.5”), Hobgood sixth (25’-6”), Cory Felker seventh (24’-9” and Jordan Ashby eighth (24’-6.5”).

WCHS senior Chase Stone looked strong in the 800 meter, taking first with a 2:16 clocking. Teammate Juanshae Baker was second (2:18) while Velazquez was fourth (2:22) and Robinson eighth (2:37).

Webster’s relay teams had little trouble in winning their races. The 3200 meter squad (Jon Ashby, Stone, Pryor, Juanshae Baker) easily won in 8:48.10. The 1600 quartet (Baker, Baker Zack Calvert, Stone) was second with a time of 3:55.

The 800 meter relay squad (Tanner Corum, Aaron Brothers, Seth Barnhill and Jeremy Hoover) was second overall in 1:51.96. The same squad finished second in the 400 meter relay with a 51.83 clocking.

Coleman Barnhill was third in the 110 hurdles (20.03) while Damaal Woolfolk was fourth (22.94) and Trey Drury fifth (27.46). Zach Martin was second in the 300 meter hurdles (50.67) while Woolfolk was sixth (54.37) and Drury seventh (1:02.18).

Martin also placed fifth in the 400 meter dash (60.0) while teammate Zack Calvert was sixth (61.92). James Nance was fourth in the 200 meter (25.93) followed by teammates David Resto in fifth (26.03) and Zack Calvert 10th (27.60).

James Winstead was third overall in the triple jump (29’-11”).

In girls’ action, the Lady Trojans received first-place finishes from seniors Lynette Harris, Stephanie Householder and Paula Phillips to earn a second-place team finish behind Madisonville-North Hopkins.

The Lady Maroons had 92 points while the Lady Trojans completed the day with 74. Dawson Springs had 37 points while Hopkins Central had 24.

Phillips bested the field in the 300 meter hurdles with a swift 58.99 clocking. She also finished second in the 110 meter hurdles (18.81) while Morgan Donaldson was fourth (20.95).

Lynette Harris dominated the triple jump field with a leap of 30’-2”.

Stephanie Householder ran strong in the 800 meter to win with a tie of 2:49. Aleisha Stone was third in 2:58.

Raven Baxter was second overall in the 100 meter with a 13.63 clocking while teammate Mariah Herrera was fourth in 15.19. Baxter also finished second in the 200 meter (28.97) while Herrera was again fourth (30.96). Brittany Pabey was sixth (32.69).

Meghan Weldon was second in the discus (82’-1”) while Marina McDowell was sixth (49’-6”). Weldon also placed third in the shot put with a heave of 27’-4”. McDowell was fourth (20’-10”).

Ali Cherry had a strong showing in the 3200 meter, placing second overall in 14:36. Paula Phillips was close behind in third place (15:04).

Cassidy Thomas was third overall in the 1600 meter with a time of 6:46. Madison Townsend was sixth in the 400 meter (1:22.19).

Webster looked good in relay action as the 1600 meter squad (Harris, Stephanie Householder, Madison Townsend and Aleisha Stone) was second overall in 4:58.

WC’s 3200 meter squad (Householder, Phillips, Stone, Thomas) was second in 11:39, while 800 meter relay unit (Baxter, Weldon, Herrera, Pabey) also finished second in 2:05.45.

Another second place finish came from the 400 meter relay team (Baxter, Herrera, Pabey and Janesa Breedlove) with a time of 59.89.
