Long-time editor of The Journal-Enterprise, Mary Ann Oakley, passed away Saturday at the age of 78.

Oakley was a member of the newspaper staff from the early 1970s, and served as the managing editor during the latter part of that decade. She was named editor in 1980, and served in that capacity until 1992 when health issues led her to retire.

Oakley wrote the popular “Acorns by Oak-ley” for the majority of her time as editor, and had a story on the Blizzard of 1978 that was picked up by TIME magazine.

She was a 1957 graduate of Providence High School, and attended Western Kentucky University for a period before returning home and marrying Billy Oakley in 1958.

Funeral services for Oakley will be this morning at 11:00 a.m. at Providence General Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m.
