Down Memory Lane

No injuries resulted in a fire that severely damaged Ward’s Grocery on Madison Street in Providence Monday morning, according to Providence Fire Deapartment.

Firemen received the call at about 3:50 a.m.

“It was pretty well engulfed by the time we got there,” a department spokesman said.

Cause is unknown. The fire department spokesman described the damage as a total loss, although no official estimates were available at press time.

The grocery is owned by Annabelle Ward of Providence.

Heavy Snow Caves In Sureway Roof

The roof caved in on Providence’s Sureway Food Store Tuesday morning — literally.

Weight of snow piled on the building in Darben Plaza caused part of the roof to collapse, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

“We’re at a standstill,” Thomas Dye, store manager, said. “We don’t have any idea what to do. We can’t relocate in the old building because the equipment is already torn out.”

According to Dye, neighbors of the store said they heard a disturbance at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Providence Fireman Mike Hughes said that fire and police units were called to the scene by a Sureway employee at about 7:30 a.m.

Dye said it will take a minimum of three months before the grocery could be repaired. The Darben Plaza store opened some 14 months ago.
