On a night where Webster County struggled to put points on the scoreboard, the Trojan defense came to the forefront to make up for the lack of offense.

The Trojans stymied the Livingston Central offense, and Webster grinded out a tough 38-33 win over the Cardinals in Smithland on Monday night.

Webster County led 10-5 at the end of the first quarter, and five of the Trojans’ points in the frame came from junior Drew Skinner.

The Cardinals narrowed the deficit to 18-16 at the intermission and led briefly in the third quarter before the Trojans surged back in front on a three-point play by sophomore Aden Winn. Webster held a 27-24 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The teams swapped baskets in the first few minutes of the frame before Livingston’s Dylan Sherer nailed a 3-pointer to make the score 35-33 and bring the Cardinals within two with 1:41 to play.

But Livingston was not able to get any closer the rest of the way, and the Trojans were able to make free throws and escape with the victory.

Senior Chatman Ellis and Winn led the Trojans in the victory with 10 points apiece as the Cardinals held Ellis to his season-low in scoring.

Skinner and senior Hunter Camplin each scored seven while sophomores Tyler Camplin and Grant Nance each finished with two.

Sherer topped all Cardinal scorers with 12 points while Cameron Dean and Seth Hosick each had six.

Webster County will play its final home game of the season on Thursday night against McLean County. The Trojans defeated the Cougars 72-60 back on Dec. 12.

The Trojans will then travel to face University Heights and standout guard Dekeyvan “KyKy” Tandy (31.0 PPG) on Friday night in Hopkinsville. The game against the Blazers last year was cancelled due to the flu.

Webster will enter postseason play on Tuesday night, facing off against Union County in the first round of the Sixth District tournament at Henderson County. The two teams split during the regular season, with the Braves handing the Trojans a 53-45 defeat in Dixon in the last meeting on Feb. 2.
